I'm now the Organiser for the Singapore Bookcrossing Meetup Group

When I met Preetam to discuss the proposed SG BlogCon a few weeks ago, he told me about Meetup.com and how Singaporeans are one of the more active meetup groups. He also told me about the Singapore Bookcrossing Meetup group.

I've heard about Bookcrossing maybe 2 years back. From bookcrossing.com:

bookcrossing
n. the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise.

Read more about Bookcrossing here.

So I went in to meetup.com to take a look and subsequently signed up for an account. The system told me the group did not have an organiser at the moment. It said:
At a minimum, we ask that you:
  • Confirm that the meeting place is open for business and can accommodate your group
  • Show up for the monthly Meetup and welcome members.
  • Allow members to contact you through the Meetup.com website (your email address will not be revealed)
Ok, I could do that, I thought. For one, the public libraries would certainly welcome bookcrossing meetings (not that it must always be in the library). So now I'm the Organiser. Just received a confimation message from Meetup.com, which says: "As a Meetup Organizer, you're bringing community to life."

Hmm... what have I gotten myself into this time?

Nevermind. Meetup.com also says it's easy to step down as Organiser, so we'll see. If I botch this up and group members start sending me hate mails, I'll drop the Organiser post faster than you can spell "Liblogarian"! :)

    2. I did sign up, but didn't go to any meetings as they all clashed with another group's.

Ivan: don't worry about offending anyone. This group's already been missing an organiser for a couple of months anyway.
